Adam Lambert’s Emotional “Believe” Performance Brings Cher to Tears
Adam Lambert, a former American Idol contestant and the current lead singer of Queen, delivered a powerful rendition of Cher’s legendary 1998 song “Believe” at the 41st Annual Kennedy Center Honors in 2019, bringing the iconic pop star to tears. The prestigious awards event, held on December 26, 2018, was broadcast from the Kennedy Center Opera House in Washington, D.C., USA. This ceremony recognizes individuals for their lifetime contributions to the arts. Lambert performed as a tribute to Cher, who was one of the evening’s honorees.
Lambert’s interpretation of “Believe” was deeply emotional and ballad-like, offering a sharp contrast to the song’s original upbeat and energetic vibe. The camera captured Cher visibly moved, with tears streaming down her face as Lambert performed. Three weeks after the event, Cher expressed her continued appreciation for the performance on Twitter, describing it as “BEYOND COMPREHENSION.”
Cher wasn’t the only artist to receive a delightful surprise at the Kennedy Center Honors. Rock icon Cyndi Lauper, who had previously informed Cher that she was out of town, astonished her with a performance of “If I Could Turn Back Time.” Lauper and Lambert concluded the evening with a duet of “I Got You Babe,” adding to the night’s memorable moments.
In a recent interview with Attitude magazine, Lambert looked back on his memorable performance of “Believe.” He shared that he was extremely nervous before taking the stage, feeling his heart race. Nevertheless, he expressed it was a privilege to perform a song by one of the most legendary singers ever. Lambert revealed that he had been a fan of Cher’s music since high school, with her 1998 album “Believe” being among his favorites.
Lambert’s tribute at the Kennedy Center Honors was not his first homage to a music legend. In 2016, he showcased his impressive vocal talents in a tribute to George Michael on the TV show “Greatest Hits,” performing the 1987 hit “Faith.” Both performances left fans highly impressed, solidifying Lambert’s reputation as one of the top vocalists of his generation.
The Kennedy Center Honors is one of the highest accolades an American performer can achieve. This annual awards ceremony, now in its 44th year, celebrates individuals for their lifetime achievements in the arts. The 2018 ceremony also honored country music star Reba McEntire, jazz composer Wayne Shorter, composer Philip Glass, and Lin-Manuel Miranda along with the cast of Hamilton.
